In New Podcast, El Tiempo Latino Publisher Shares First Impressions of DC’s Latino ‘Economic Power’

— El Tiempo Latino translates President Trump Twitter tweets into Spanish —

WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 19, 2017 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) - In the second installment of his podcast series, “Point-On with Javier Marin,” the publisher of El Tiempo Latino newspaper in Washington, DC, said that the area’s Latino communities have a unique “sense of power” in economics, business, and culture.

Marin said that, in his first months in the DC area as the new owner of El Tiempo Latino, he has noticed that Latino entrepreneurs are thriving in the Washington, D.C. area with businesses in various sectors from car dealers to retail franchises.

“It has been a very interesting first impression,” he said during the podcast. “It’s a very global experience. You feel the sense of our nation capital’s environment with a lot of languages in all sort of places, and a diversity, a very vibrant diversity in different socioeconomic sectors.”

The podcast series, “Point-On with Javier Marin,” was launched to discuss key issues that impact Latino communities in the Washington area, and across the country. Marin, the longtime publisher of the El Planeta newspaper in Boston, recently purchased El Tiempo Latino in DC from the Washington Post.

In his second podcast, which can be downloaded here, Marin announced that Macy’s, BB&T, Copa Airlines, and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation are new sponsors for the Powermeter 100, a gala that will be held on June 26, 2017, at the Washington Post Live Center in Washington, D.C. The event will honor 100 individuals in the Washington, D.C. area who are making significant contributions to area Latino communities and enhancing the quality of life for residents of those communities.

In what many may consider a surprise, Marin said that more than one person has nominated President Trump to be selected as one of the Powermeter 100. In addition, he said that El Tiempo Latino has been translating all of President Trump’s tweets into Spanish and posting them on the newspaper’s website.

“I think (we are) the only media outlet, which is translating, literally translating every tweet that President Trump is publishing and the response has been positive (to making the tweets available),“ he said. “There is a lot of supporters from the Latino community that are retweeting our translations to President Trump’s tweets. That should not be translated like the Latino community as a majority supports President Trump, it reflects first the need of this Government to express what they want to inform in the Spanish language.”

For 11 years, El Planeta has successfully hosted a Powermeter 100 in Boston, honoring government, civic, sports and community leaders regardless of their ethnicity or race. The deadline for nominations for the DC area Powermeter 100 is April 28, 2017. Nominations for the DC Powermeter 100 can be made by going to www.eltiempolatino.com/powermeter.

In addition, he said, the Powermeter 100 in DC will have an impact on how Latino communities “think about leadership.” He encouraged the public to submit nominations and help El Tiempo build a “sense of inclusion” in local Latino communities.
